VITRAŽAI | Technique for crafting hand made Tiffany stained glass

This page outlines the technique used to create original hand made Tiffany stained glass pieces.

Technique of Tiffany Stained Glass

First, a sketch of stained glass is created. Then a sketch is made to it's true size, cut into separate parts and, based on the sketch, the details are glued on glass of different colors and texture. Subsequently, the stained glass elements are cut from glass, processed on a special machine to create an exact shape and each processed piece wrapped in a strip of copper foil. All wrapped parts are assembled together and welded on both sides with lead solder. To strengthen the construction of stained glass, brass profile is used. In conclusion, all seams are covered with patina and a layer of antioxidant.

Just as in a classic stained glass window, in Tiffany's stained glass only special glass of different colors, shades and textures is used. It distinguishes Tiffany's technique from other cheaper stained-glass technology (contour, flush, lacquer, and film) and brings the Tiffany stained glass window in line with classic stained glass window in terms of resistance to external influences. Tiffany stained glass windows are very resistant to fluctuations in temperature and the impact of other external factors, and therefore very durable.

Unlike the classic stained glass window in which the lead profile is used, a very thin copper foil strip is used in the Tiffany stained glass, allowing the joining of details with the finest sutures of 2-3 mm and creating unusual complexity of composition. The different thickness of seams and changing shades of patinas emphasize the uniqueness of each artwork. Even if created from the same sketch, there aren't (and won't be) two artworks alike. In addition, unlike lead, the copper base allows the joining of parts at different angles, creating an impression of volume and bulge. If one part of the stained glass is damaged, the peculiarities of the Tiffany technique make it possible to replace it without damaging the strength of the whole structure.
