What is Tiffany stained glass
This manufacturing technique was named after its inventor: the artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (the son of the founder of the famous brand and the company Tiffany & Co). At the end of the 19th century, he created a new special type of opal glass. This glass had special aesthetic qualities - unusual interior light and a huge variety of shades and textures which made it possible to create unparalleled, dynamic effects. Instead of traditional lead, Tiffany used copper foil strips which enabled him to solder small pieces of glass and create much more detailed artworks to be used in windows, ceilings, doors, niches, partitions, as lampshades of lamps, panels, countertops, etc. Tiffany stained glass is entirely hand made. Every stained glass is an individual and unique piece of art that can’t be repeated.
How is Tiffany stained glass made?
First, a sketch of stained glass is created. Based on the sketch, the actual large stained glass template is being done, which is then cut into individual pieces, adhered to screens that fit different colors and texture glasses. Stained glass pieces are cut from the glass, sanded with a special machine to give it a precise shape, and each piece of glass is wrapped with a copper foil strip. Next, all the wrapped parts are combined in a full work, and all the details are soldered on both sides with a solder. To make the construction more durable, the stained glass is framed with a brass profile. At the end, all stained-glass seams are covered with a patina and antioxidant layer.
